Baby in womb - Folic acid and Iron Supplements intake during pregnancy

When pregnancy starts many women ask themselves if it is really necessary to take supplements. The answer is clearly yes. The reason is that it is very difficult to get alll nutrients that you and your baby need even if you take good care of having a balanced diet including a good mix of meat, vegetables, fruits, milk products and cereals.

Most of the women can get benefits from prenatal supplements, which include vitamins and minerals. The best option is to start taking them immediately when the pregnancy starts. Supplements  guarantee that you and your baby are taking the necessary nutrients during the whole pregnancy.

Specially women with some health problems such as being vegetarian, vegan, smoker, consume alcohol, drugs, have an eating disorder, have problems in the blood-vascular system, have lactose intolerance, have had a gastric bypass surgery, are expecting twins or more babies, should have a balanced healthy diet during the whole pregnancy and afterwards.

Supplements – Rich in Folic acid and Iron

There are two crucial nutrients, which must be taken during pregnancy: Folic acid and Iron. Most of the women can not get these vitamins every day from the food.

Folic acid

By taking necessary amount of this B vitamin you can reduce between 50-70% the risk that your baby develops problems of neural tube defect such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Folic acid can also reduce the risk of other defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate. Further, Folic acid reduces the risk of developing preeclampsy during pregnancy. It is clinically proven that folic acid is best absorbed by the body if it is taken in a supplement instead of getting it from food.

Iron is very necessary during pregnancy because the body produces more blood for the baby. It is a fact that most of the women can not consume the necessary amount of iron in their diets and this can lead to developing anemia due to a lack of iron, which is very dangerous for the mother to be and the baby. It is indispensable to avoid developing this anemia otherwise there is a risk of having a premature bith, baby low weight and baby death.
